J Camp - Summer Camp 2019

The Jewish Community Center Day Camp (J Camp) offers a summer full of adventure, new activities and ultimate camp fun! Boys and girls entering 1st-8th grade register for sessions May 28 – August 9, 2019. The day camp program operates Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Early Care is available from 7-9 a.m. and Late Care is available from 4 - 6 p.m.

Camp activities include games, crafts, science, sports, archery, swimming, swim lessons, Jewish and Israeli culture, field trips, and special events. Specialty camps offer specific skill development through art projects, theatrical productions, triathlon training, culinary projects, engineering activities, and basketball, soccer, baseball and football training and drills. Older youth programming specifically focuses on leadership development and community service.

You will be joining a staff that is caring, friendly, and skilled in providing a great summer experience. You will be able to develop job skills such as problem solving, negotiating, listening, flexibility, and creativity.

J Camp is accredited by the American Camp Association and licensed by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. The Child Development Center at The J is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. We work hard to meet the standards of all these organizations because we are committed to providing a safe and positive environment where children are challenged and supported.

J Camp 2019

J Camp is in session May 28 – August 9, 2019.

Required Training

Staff Training will be held May 28 - 31. Training required will depend on the position and training already completed.

J Camp Positions

Camp Directors and Assistant Directors

Preference to those 21 years of age or older. Preference to those with previous camp experience. Salary $9.50/hour and higher, depending on job responsibilities and qualifications.

  • Overall responsibility for program schedule and general administration of the day camp program.

  • Supervises staff within camp program, including Senior Counselors, Junior Counselors, and LITs.

  • Consults with counselors and approves activity plans and supply requests.

  • Ensures program equipment and supplies are available and in adequate supply.

  • Oversees or implements camp programs, including undernights, field trips, and special events.

  • Coordinates arrival and departure of campers. Communicates with parents, as necessary.

Senior Counselors

Must be 18 years old and a high school graduate or older. Salary $8.50-$9.50/hour, depending on qualifications.

  • Responsible for the health and safety of campers.

  • Oversees all aspects of camper group schedule and programs. Creates and carries out activity plans. Ensures that campers follow the schedule and are on time for activities.

  • Coordinates with other staff to implement group day camp program. Leads day camp programs, teaches activities, and assists with swim lessons.

  • Works with Camp Directors to create and implement behavior management plans.

  • Maintains records as required, such as attendance, medicine, swimming and safety related information.

  • Assists with all camp special activities. Attends staff training and staff meetings.

Ma’asim Tovim Senior Counselors

Must be 21 years of age or older. Must have a valid driver’s license. All Ma’asim Tovim staff will be required to have a clean driving record. Salary $9.00-10/hour depending on qualifications.

  • Responsible for the health and safety of campers.

  • Oversees all aspects of camper group schedule and programs. Creates and carries out activity plans. Ensures that campers follow the schedule and are on time for activities.

  • Drives campers to program sites and maintain cleanliness of 12-passenger van.

  • Coordinates with other staff to implement day camp program. Leads day camp programs, and activities.

  • Maintains records as required, such as attendance, medicine, swimming and safety related information.

  • Attends orientation, staff meetings, and as assigned - evening programs and overnights.

  • Works with Camp Director to create and implement behavior management plans.

Junior Counselors

Must be at least 16 years old and entering 11th-12 grade. Salary $7.75 per hour.

  • Assists Senior Counselor in creating activity plans, leading group activities, and recordkeeping.

  • Works with campers, assists with teaching activities and assists with swim lessons.

  • Creates group newsletter article each week and assists, as needed with special all-camp activities.

  • Attends orientation, staff meetings, and assigned undernight programs.

Other Summer 2019 Positions

Full Job Descriptions available. Salaries based on age, experience and responsibilities.

  • Before and After-Care Staff: Must be 16 or older. Prefer staff 18 years of age or older. $7.75-9.50/hour based on qualifications. Supervises youth before and after camp.

  • Para-Educators: Must be 18 years of age or older. $9-14/hour based on qualifications. Preference to those with education or experience in working with youth with special needs. Responsibilities: Work with youth with developmental or special needs to modify or adapt camp experiences. With parents, develop goals and document progress.

  • Archery Specialist: Must be 19 years of age or older. $9-11/hour based on qualifications. Sets up and teaches archery skill sessions for campers. Creatively makes archery a fun experience for campers. Will be required to have Archery certification or complete certification training.

  • Art and Science Specialist: Prefer those 19 years of age older. $9-11/hour based on qualifications. Creates STEAM programs for campers, including Barney Goodman and BOOM! campers. Plans and conducts weekly sessions, 4 days per week.

  • Music Specialist: Must be 18 years of age or older. $9-11/hour based on qualifications. Energetic song leader with programming experience. Music position part-time or combined with counselor position. Teach music and lead song to groups.

  • Camp Office Manager: Must be 19 years of age or older. $9-10/hour based on qualifications. Oversees supplies, scheduling, office management and facilitates communication with parents and staff.

  • Substitute Staff: Prefer staff 18 years of age or older. $7.75-9.50/hour based on qualifications. Work with groups of youth in leading camp programs. Hours vary according to the need.
